Micro Quad Frames

My very good friend came to visit me and brought some micro-quadcopters with him.
So naturally I decided to design and build my own.








Printing microquad frames has two advantages over prebuilt frames:
- They’re dirt cheap – roughly 20-30p a frame as opposed to several pounds
- They’re customisable – which for me means more fun designing
Materials
I started prototyping with PLA until I got the frame right. Then moved on to PETG.
Theoretically PETG is an excellent choice for quad frames; It’s tough, easy to print with and pretty cheap.
Unfortunately anytime I had a major crash indoors (which was pretty common) an arm would break off. Not to mention letting my girlfriend try and fly it.
After going through 4 or 5 frames I decided to make a semi-flex frame.
The material I used was PCTPE, a nylon based flexible filament. Its pretty much the toughest (most energy absorbed before breaking) material you can print with but being a nylon its not straightforward to print with:

After finally getting a print to stick long enough I have an un-self-destructible frame to play with 🙂
